Genetic Control of Spermatogenesis and Sex Determination in Mammals

The material was analyzed on the main problems of genetics of mammalian spermatogenesis, sex determination, its reversion and other defects from the standpoint of current cytological and molecular-genetic concepts of functional activity of the parental genomes after fertilization and behavior of their chromosomes at the early embryonic stages. On the basis of this analysis, a hypothesis has been proposed, which explains a high percentage (50% or more) of early embryonic mortality in placental mammals under the conditions of natural and extracorporeal fertilization, as well as regular appearance of defects in the course of natural sex determination, including the appearance of representatives of both sex minorities. We do not make pretense to comprehensive and deep analysis of male gametogenesis and sex determination in mammals.     

DNA repair and apoptosis]

DNA damage induced by exo- and endogenous agents triggers two opposite mechanisms--DNA repair and programmed cell death. The latter contains a phase of DNA degradation. Both mechanisms compete for DNA as a substrate and for the cell energy supply. The interaction and competition of these processes influence the pattern of cell death (from pure apoptosis to necrosis). Synergetic and competitive relations between DNA-repair and apoptosis are reviewed.     

Effect of activity duration on recovery and metabolic costs in the desert iguana (Dipsosaurus dorsalis).

The majority of elevated O(2) consumption associated with short and vigorous activity occurs during recovery, thus an assessment of associated metabolic costs should also examine the excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). This study examined O(2) uptake during exercise, EPOC and distance traveled during 5-, 15-, 60- and 300-s sprints at maximal treadmill intensity in Dipsosaurus (N=10; 74.3+/-2.1 g). EPOC (0.08, 0.14, 0.23 and 0.18 ml O(2) g(-1), respectively) was large (80-99% of total elevated O(2) consumption) and increased significantly between 5 and 60 s. The cost of activity (C(act); ml O(2) g(-1) x km(-1)), intended to reflect the total net costs associated with the activity, was calculated as the total elevated O(2) consumption per unit distance traveled. C(act) decreased with activity duration due to proportionally larger increases in distance traveled relative to EPOC volume, and is predicted by the equation C(act)=14.7 x activity duration (s)(-0.24). The inclusion of EPOC costs provides an ecologically relevant estimate of the total metabolic cost of locomotor activity. C(act) exceeds standard transport costs at all durations examined due to the addition of obligate recovery costs. The differences are large enough to impact energy budget analyses for ectotherms.     

Requirements of Pseudomonas aeruginosaDissociants in Glucose, Nitrate, and Phosphate. Limiting Concentrations of the Nutrients during Batch Cultivation

Requirements of R-, S-, and M-dissociants of Pseudomonas aeruginosaK-2 strain in glucose, nitrate, and phosphate, as well as the error of determination, have been calculated from the data of 250 experiments on their batch cultivation on the media with the various initial content of these resources. The resource requirements of R- and S-dissociants appear indistinguishable within the error limits. The requirements of M-dissociant significantly differ from those of R- and S-forms; however, due to specific growth of the M-form, the confidence intervals of the measured values can overlap with those of R-space and S-forms. The obtained requirement values allow an evaluation of the studied resources concentration limiting the culture growth.     

The synthesis and hepatoprotective activity of esters of the lupane group triterpenoids

Hemisuccinates, hemiphthalates, acetylsalicylates, cinnamates, andp-methoxycinnamates of lupeol, betulin, and 3-O-acetylbetulin were synthesized via interaction with corresponding acid anhydrides or acid chlorides. A number of betulin esters in position 3 and 28 were shown to exhibit a pronounced hepatoprotective effect similar to that of betulin and silibor. These experimental data were in a good agreement with the computer prediction of their biological activity. Betulin 3,28-bishemiphthalate was more effective than carsil in models of experimental hepatitis caused by carbon tetrachloride, tetracycline, and ethanol.     

Phosphatases and phosphodiesterases isolated from the red king crab (Paralithodes camtschatica) hepatopancreas

Five enzymes have been isolated from the hepatopancreas of the red king crab Paralithodes camtschatica by means of ion exchange and gel chromatography: two acid (AcP) and one alkaline (AlkP) phosphomonoesterases, one alkaline phosphodiesterase (AlkPI), and one acid phosphodiesterase (AcPD). The pH optimum values of these enzymes are: AlkPs and AlkPD, 7.5; AcP, 5.5; and AcPD, 5.0. The activity of AlkP and AlkPD demands Mg²⁺ ions. The molecular weights of the enzymes (kDa) are the following: AlkP, 80; AcPs, 80 and 82; AlkPD, 51; and AcPD, 57. The enzymes are relatively thermostable (ID 50 from 47 to 62°C). AlkP is inhibited by NaCl (IC 50 at 0.4 M). The AcP, AcPD, and AlkPD activities are tolerant of high ionic strength.     

Characteristics of visual perception in seven-year-old children differing in functional maturity of brain structures

Individual and age-related characteristics of visual perception as a whole and its individual components were studied in seven-year-old children as related to their brain functional development. A dependence was found between the success of visual perception and the characteristics determining the functional maturity of both the cerebral cortex and the brain regulatory structures. Difficulties in noise resistance, visuospatial perception, and visual analysis/synthesis were greater in first-year school students with signs of immaturity of the bioelectrical activity of the cerebral cortex. Poor development of the visual perception system in schoolchildren was also determined by an underdeveloped frontothalamic regulatory system and deviations in the functional state of the nonspecific activation system.     

<Emphasis Type="Italic">Artemisia lerchiana</Emphasis> as a producer of essential oil

Abstrac  The composition of essential oil of Artemisia lerchiana Web. plants growing in Volgograd oblast was studied. Sampling was performed from plots contrasting in climatic and soil characteristics. Essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation. The content of essential oil in shoot biomass increased gradually during shoot formation, flower bud formation, and flowering beginning and then decreased. The highest content of essential oil varied from 1.1 to 1.5% of plant dry weight at the stage of flower bud formation. More than thirty compounds were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The following major components were found: camphor, borneol, bornylacetate, camphene, and 1,8-cineole. Some of compounds (sesquiterpenes and sesquiterpenoids) were identified for the first time. The time-course of accumulation of essential oil components strongly depended on habitat edaphic factors and climatic conditions during the year of sampling. The results permit a conclusion that A. lerchiana is a valuable producer of essential oils. Original Russian Text ? E.B. Kirichenko, Yu.V. Orlova, D.V. Dynamics of macrozoobenthos productivity characteristics on shelves of the Far Eastern seas in the 2000s

The trophic structure of benthic communities in the Sea of Okhotsk and Bering Sea was analyzed based on the results of macrobenthic survey catches conducted in the Far Eastern seas in the 2000s. The production of trophic levels and entire communities was determined. It was shown that production of benthic communities is still at a high level and has almost not changed since the 1980s. The arrangement of the communities of some shelf areas by productivity characteristics was made.
